I home-roast, so mostly drinking single origins for now. Just finished the last of my last El Salvador Mirasol Estate - creamy, mild acidity and smooth.

Incidentally I also picked up a bag of (roasted) organic guatemalan beans from AromaFest last week from Mayan Coffee and in my opinion tastes quite similar to the El Salvador I roasted... so I must be doing something right!

So, what are in the cups of BaristaZoo members?

Hi Andrew,

I am just back from holidays at a cabin on the Myal Lakes in NSW. I took my Vibiemme and KS grinder with me and had some single origin Costa Rica SHB and also some PNG Kimel Estate.

I have to say I love the Costa Rica SHB.

I was not going to take the Vibiemme but I am very happy I did. There is nothing quite like waking up to great coffee.

had the pleasure of a holiday with zoo member matt and his family christmas 06. he took along a espresso machine (can't remember the type) and it was a pleasure to get up in the morning for a real coffee. i loved waking up to a house filled with that distinctive coffee aroma. i was so impressed that in christmas 07 i took my venezia and brewed up a storm. even though it seems like a hassle when you're packing, it is well worth the effort when you get to your destination.

Can't beat great coffee first thing in the morning, and when you're on holidays all the better. When I'm out and about I take my AeroPress with me. It's portable, quick, easy to clean and makes a great brew.

I've think I've been past Myall Lakes a couple of times before, whilst holidaying at Hawks Nest and Tea Gardens. If it's the same place I think it is, great place to getaway and escape for awhile.

Cupping notes from Sweet Marias sounds interesting - wow, a cup of coffee that's too perfect? I'll certainly keep an eye out for the Costa Rica SHB.

Cheers, Andrew

Im using some Toby's Estate but only because I couldn't get the usual Morgans.

Hey Benj,

I've had Toby's Estate many times though usually bought from a cafe... haven't actually made it to their Roastery or Espresso Bars yet though.

I used to get my beans from Campos before I started roasting. Heard of Morgans a couple of times but not had the opportunity to spot it anywhere yet in my travels.

i suggest to get your hands on single origin beans from costa rica, a coffee bar in newcastle sells and serves it as well as many others, but it is a great flavour!

I have recently been drinking some Guatemalan Huehuetenango roasted by Mayan Coffee/Guatemalan Traders in Sydney. Roberto Orellano is the owner and has a cafe set up in the ancient Mayan tradition where hot chocolate and traditional Guatemalan food features prominently. The cafe is on the corner of Danks St and South Dowling St in Waterloo. Very nice indeed!

The last few months has been single origin tasting for me and I must say, it has opened my eyes to the wealth of flavour (and occasionally lack of!) that is out there in the world of coffee. It's hard going back to my old blend after the likes of a good Kenya AA!

Hi
We only drink Australian Coffees and really like the medium roast organic coffee beans from our coffee grower in Childers, Queensland. It's very smooth gives a great coffee flavour without any bitter aftertaste.

where do you recommend i get some already roasted sinlge origin coffees to try, like guatemalan or el salvador etc. Thinking about using a unique coffee for when i set up my business.

Hi Chris, if you are in Sydney and are ever in the lower North Shore, try Witham's Coffee in Artarmon. Finding a good boutique roaster that roasts single origins to perfection is fairly rare. Withams do it well.

Ethiopian Limu is still up there as one of the finest single origins for me. Full of strength with a smooth aftertaste. Would highly recommend it!
